Following a review and suspension of the WA Premier's Book Awards, UWA Publishing has won two awards at a ceremony on September 1.

Doing Life: A Biography of Elizabeth Jolley, by Brian Dibble won the WA History award in the 2008 category, while Penelope Hetherington's Paupers, Poor Relief and Poor Houses In Western Australia: 1829 -1910 won the award in the 2009 category.

Seven UWAP titles were shortlisted for the awards: Geoffrey Bolton's Land of Vision and Mirage: A History of WA Since 1826; Tiffany Shellam's Shaking Hands on the Fringe: Negotiating the Aboriginal World at King George's Sound; The Historical Encyclopedia of Western Australia, edited by Jenny Gregory and Jan Gothard; Simon Adams' The Unforgiving Rope: Murder and Hanging at Australia's Western Frontier and Emily Ballou's The Darwin Poems.

UWA Publishing director, Terri-ann White said she was thrilled with the two wins and the large number of UWAP titles shortlisted across both years.

The WA Premier's Book Awards underwent a review in 2008 and was reinstated this year with and increase in prize money to $110,000. Both 2008 and 2009 titles were awarded at the same event.
