July 2016 awards and achievements

Name: George Ford Achievement: Rio Olympic Games selection A Bachelor of Science student. George was selected in the Australian men’s water polo team for the Rio Olympics, which start this Friday 5 August.

Name: Assistant Professor Andrew Guzzomi, Dr Todd Erickson, Alan Ling, Dr David Merritt and Professor Kingsley Dixon Achievement: WA Innovator of the Year finalist A/Professor Guzzomi and final-year student Alan from UWA’s School of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, and Dr Erickson, Dr Merritt and Professor Dixon from UWA’s School of Plant Biology and Kings Park and Botanic Garden were nominated for inventing a new technique for flash “flaming” wild seeds to improve land restoration.

Name: Jaxon Evans Achievement: Sir Frank Espie/Rio Tinto Leadership Award, presented by The Minerals Institute (Aus IMM) Jaxon is in his fifth year of a Master of Professional Engineering (Mining) degree at UWA after completing a Bachelor of Science (Mining and Finance) at UWA. He has undertaken five internships during his studies, including engineering roles at BHP Billiton and Buru Energy, as a market analyst for Coffey International, as an offsider for Terra Drilling and as an intern for Dalian Bolong Investment Holdings Group in China. The award aims to identify future industry leaders and ensure they are offered meaningful opportunities to develop

Name: Dr Daniel Hunt Achievement: NAIDOC Scholar of the Year for WA After graduating in Medicine from UWA with an Aboriginal Health specialisation in 2011, Dr Hunt decided he wanted to become an oral maxillofacial surgeon and this year will complete UWA’s four year postgraduate dental course. The award is an acknowledgement of Dr Hunt’s achievements, dedication and commitment to Aboriginal health.

Name: Tim Shanahan Achievement: Appointed chairman of WA Regional Development Trust After serving three years as deputy chairman of the WA Regional Development Trust, UWA Principal Adviser Tim Shanahan has been promoted to chairman. The Trust is an independent statutory body established under the Royalties for Regions Act 2009 and provides advice on the Royalties for Regions program.
