Not long before Prime Minister Tony Abbott's visit to China for trade talks, a delegation of seven Professors from Australian universities travelled to China to promote joint research in the musculoskeletal disciplines.

The professors, representing The University of Western Australia, the University of Adelaide and the University of Sydney, were invited by the University of Hong Kong and the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology and Chinese Academy of Sciences.

UWA's Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences was represented by Winthrop Professor Jaike Xu (School of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine), Winthrop Professor Minghao Zheng and Associate Professor Nathan Pavlos (Centre for Orthopaedic Research, School of Surgery).

"Excellent symposia were held in both Hong Kong and Shenzhen, giving us the opportunity to showcase the musculoskeletal research being performed at UWA, and to see first-hand the work being done by our colleagues in Hong Kong and China," Professor Xu said.

"Talks were also held to identify areas of mutual interest that can form the basis of ongoing collaborative efforts between our institutes.  These led to commitments to further relationship-building visits, student exchange and joint research initiatives.  Importantly, the visit resulted in the establishment of the China-Australia Musculoskeletal Alliance to develop and promote research collaboration to address major issues in musculoskeletal conditions."
