The Faculty wishes to offer our congratulations to Professor Anya Waite who has been awarded the PCB Professional Development Scholarship.

In a formal award ceremony at the Perth Town Hall, the PCB Professional Development Scholarships were awarded by a number of dignitaries including Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi and Professor Alan Robson, Vice Chancellor of UWA.

Professor Anya Waite was one of the UWA winners, receiving funding to support international travel, to a keynote presentation at a Canadian conference, and for promotion of UWA's bid for the 2014 ASLO meeting. ASLO is the premier international association for the research of lakes and oceans, and its meetings draw between 2000 and 3000 delegates.

Professor Anya Waite is confident WA will win its bid to host the Advancing the Society of Limnology and Oceanography conference in 2014, and she will join the 2012 delegation in Japan to make sure it happens.

The environmental engineering school head received $5000 from the Perth Convention Bureau last Friday to attend an international oceans science conference in Montreal during July and improve WA' bid for the next oceanography meeting.

Professor Waite said the council adjourned for a day before announcing Japan would host the next conference over Australia, but it was very close. "We are in really good shape to get out there and do some extra work to secure 2014", she said.
The conference would attract between 2000 and 2500 delegates who should inject more than $6 milion into WA' economy.

Professor Waite studies oceanography, particularly near Ningaloo Reef where she said little was understood about how the seas affected the reef.

UWA urban planning program coordinator Dr Paul Maginn also received $5000 from the bureau to get him to a joint meeting of the European Urban Research Association in Madrid next month.

Dr Maginn also plans to gain support for Perth to host the Third World Planning Schools Conference in 2011/12.
Eight staff from four other universities also received scholarships to attend conferences.
